Our Beliefs

We believe that Jesus Christ was the Messiah foretold: the only begotten son of God.

In Christ crucificied and resurrected, God the Father provided the only payment for our sins necessary, and through faith in him and his name alone, we find forgiveness before God — culminating in the gift of eternal life.

Introduction

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).

Christianity at its heart is breathtakingly simple. From the richest and most powerful ruler in the world, to the most downtrodden, impoverished and simple soul, the God of the Bible offers all of us, without exception, the same imperishable prize: peace, forgiveness, and an eternity with our creator in paradise.

In contrast to man-made systems and philosophies where only hard graft, works and inherited priveleges can lead to the ultimate reward, the Christian tradition turns such conventional wisdom on its head; requiring only the wisdom that even a small child could understand, while the self-righteous of the world scorn it.

But why should any god (should such a being even exist) bother with any of this? Do we not — as many believe today — simply cease to be when we die? The biblical answer to this mystery lies in a concept unique to Christianity amongst world religions, and it's a little word with a great signifiance:

Grace.

Amazing Grace

There is nothing more fundamental to the Christian faith than the message that God loves us, his creation, come what may.

And this is what grace means: God’s gratuitous acceptance of each one of us — despite our past. And it is this revelation of his love that motivates us to fulfil what Jesus described as the first and greatest commandment of all: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. (Matthew 22:36-38)

The Bible informs us that Christians were originally called “people of the way” — people who followed the example of Jesus in making true love and obedience a way of life. They took seriously the second greatest commandment from verse 39 of the same passage, to: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”

God’s love for us is our motivation to love our neighbours. In fact, the heart and soul of all true religion is this; to love and be loved. The Apostle John writes what must be one of the most inclusive statements in scripture: "Those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them” (1 John 4:16).

Our Identity

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God," (John 1:12).

The process of believing, and then receiving, the grace of God is indeed a profound mystery. For many this process is both a sudden and a lifelong awakening, as we become concious of what the Bible describes as our becoming a "new creation", with both the promise to receive, and to pursue, the Holy Spirit and "a renewed mind".

Simultaneously transformed and transforming, we move from citizenship of this earthly realm to citizenship and heirdom of heaven, where Christ the eternal king will reign in the new Jerusalem for ever. But while we remain flesh and blood, our identity is that of a Christian people, people who believe in, and follow Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour, and the Bible as God's revealed word to mankind.

By believing God — that he did what he says he did through the life, ministry and death of his son, Jesus Christ — and through the testimony of his apostles and prophets, we receive by faith adoption into his holy family.
